Study Abroad
SIT Australia

In Spring 2013 I studied Sustainability and Environmental Action in Australia through the School for International Training (SIT). We traveled to Byron Bay, Melbourne, Sydney,  and Tasmania. We toured around on a bus with our professors and guest lecturers while visiting and learning about real-world examples of sustainability and other environmental topics.

Ithaca College Environmental Society

From 2011-2013 I served a variety of roles (including President) on the executive board of ICES, one of the longest running clubs and a pillar for sustainability and environmentalism at Ithaca College. As president, one of my biggest achievements was bringing a group of 30 students to Powershift 2013, a nationwide youth environmental conference.

Independent Study Project

In the Spring of 2013 I spent a little over a month working on sustainable resource management at Byron Region community College in Mullumbibmy, New South Wales, Australia as part of my Independent Study Program. I examined energy, waste, and water resource management practices and developed recommendations that have since been implemented.  Check out the PDF of my report above. Byron College is a signatory of the Talloires Declaration, generates over 5 Megawatt-hours of solar electricity per year, and offers courses on permaculture and sustainability among many other environmentally sustainable features and practices. Its sustainbility prgram was awarded the Australian Learning program of the year in 2011. My advisor, Katrina Shields, is the college's sustainability coordinator and the co-author of a new book "Sustainability for Educators: A toolkit for Learning Activities and Resources."
